Press Play and Record at Vane brought together a body of work created over three years, which included the production of live events, video, animation, sound works and textiles. The work developed aspects of collaborations with choirs in Berlin and North East England during a research and development stage. Song lyrics, exchanges with collaborators, including spoken word recordings were woven into live events and new work exhibited in the UK and Berlin in 2017.
Follow My Leader was filmed and edited over a period of three months, firstly in Berlin, then later during the exhibition at Vane (Saturday 10 and 17 June). People were added to the piece one by one and were able to revisit the work to see their performances as it transformed and evolved over time during the exhibition. Contributors were filmed individually, dancing to their own tune whilst wearing brightly coloured love heart decorated balaclavas. In edit, their forms were removed from the background frame by frame and added to the choreographed group animation one by one. The sound track was audio dubbed over the top and taken from edits of spoken word recordings from contributions at events during the research and development stage.
